What is the meaning of the word 'Lamam' in Surah An-Najm?
The Holy Quran describes the righteous as those who stay away from the gravest of sins. The term "Lamam" is used as an exception: acknowledging human imperfection. It highlights that while a believer strives for purity: they may still stumble upon minor errors. Allah reassures that His forgiveness is vast for those who recognize their mistakes and do not claim self-righteousness.

(Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities: only [committing] slight ones. Indeed: your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim purity for yourselves; He is most knowing of who fears Him.)
Scholarly Insight: According to classical commentators like Ibn Abbas: "Lamam" refers to those sins that a person commits once or twice and then repents from: or those minor faults that do not carry a specific legal punishment (Hadd). This verse serves as a source of hope: emphasizing that the path to righteousness is not about being flawless: but about constant return to Allah's infinite mercy and avoiding the destructive major sins.
