What are the types of shirk?
There are two types of Shirk (polytheism) in Islamic theology. Understanding the clear distinction between them is crucial for a believer to protect their faith and maintain pure monotheism.
The Categories of Polytheism |
1. Major Shirk
The major shirk is that which deviates a person from his religion, such as joining other partners with Allah in worship.
2. Minor Shirk
The minor shirk does not deviate man from his religion, such as hypocrisy. However, the verbal shirk is that which contains words that associate Allah's Attributes with someone else without being aware of that.
Scholarly Insight: Scholars of the Islamic Creed emphasize that Major Shirk completely nullifies a person's faith and deeds, as it directly contradicts the core message of the Holy Quran. Minor Shirk, on the other hand, is often described as "hidden polytheism" (Shirk Khafi) because it subtly enters a person's intentions through showing off (Riya') or casual speech. While it does not remove a person from Islam, it is considered a very grave sin that voids the reward of the specific deed it infects, requiring constant vigilance and sincere repentance.
