What are the types of Monotheism?
There are three distinct types of Tawhid (Monotheism) in the Islamic faith. Understanding these three categories is essential for a believer to establish a complete and correct belief in Allah the Almighty.
The Three Categories of Tawhid |
1. Believing in Allah's Lordship
It is to believe that only Allah the Almighty is the Creator, the Possessor of all things and The Manager of all affairs. Allah the Almighty says: (Allah is the Creator of all things) [Az-Zumar 39: 62]
2. Believing in Allah's Divinity
It is to believe that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah Alone, so man should never join partners with Allah in worship.
3. Believing in Allah's Names and Attributes
It is to believe in the Uniqueness of Allah's Names and Attributes which Allah the Almighty mentions in His Book and in the words of His Prophet PBUH without any distortion or personification.
(Allah has the Most Beautiful Names. So call upon Him by them, and keep away from those who abuse His Names. They will be punished for what they used to do.) [Al-Araf 7: 180]
(Allah: there is no deity worthy of worship except Him. He has the Most Beautiful Names.) [Taha 20: 8]
Scholarly Insight: In the study of the Holy Quran and Islamic Creed, scholars categorize Tawhid into these three distinct but interconnected pillars to protect the believer from all forms of association (Shirk). Believing in Allah's Lordship (Rububiyyah) naturally demands acknowledging His Divinity (Uluhiyyah) in action: if He alone creates and manages the universe, then He alone deserves to be worshipped. Furthermore, affirming His Names and Attributes (Asma' wa Sifat) exactly as He described Himself safeguards the mind from attempting to personify or distort the majesty of the Creator.
