What are the consequences of perjury?
Islam treats the tongue with immense seriousness. A single false testimony not only destroys the rights of others but also dismantles the spiritual foundation and credibility of the liar.

1. Equivalence to Idolatry (Shirk)
Perjury is equivalent to associating idols with Allah. The greatest falsification of truth is the testimony to deities other than Allah. For this reason, avoiding falsehood has been intimately linked to pure monotheism. The Quran commands: (So shun the impurity of idolatry, and shun words of falsehood. Be upright in devotion to Allah, associating none with Him in worship.) Surah Al Hajj 22: 30 to 31. Furthermore, Allah states: (No one fabricates lies except those who disbelieve in Allah's revelations, and it is they who are the true liars.) Surah An Nahl 16: 105.
2. Nullifying Good Deeds
Perjury nullifies good deeds. The Prophet pbuh firmly stated: "Whoever does not abandon perjury and works with it, Allah has no need for his fasting." Narrated by Al Bukhari.
3. A Sign of the End Times
The multitude and normalization of perjury is a sign from the signs of the Hour. The proof of this is that the Prophet pbuh explicitly prophesied: "The signs of the Hour include perjury, and concealing the testimony of truth." Narrated by Imam Ahmad.
4. The Rejection of Future Testimony
The testimony of anyone who practices perjury will be rejected. Such a person loses their credibility completely, and their witness is no longer accepted in Islamic courts or societal matters.
Scholarly Insight: In Islamic Jurisprudence, perjury is viewed as a direct attack on the core truth of the universe. Because the ultimate truth is the Oneness of Allah (Tawheed), spreading falsehoods among people mimics the falsehood of idolatry. Scholars note that the Hadith regarding fasting profoundly illustrates the purpose of worship. If fasting, which requires abstaining from lawful food and drink, fails to stop a person from the unlawful act of lying and destroying people's rights, then the core objective of the fast has failed, rendering the physical hunger useless in the sight of Allah.
Frequently Asked Questions |
Does perjury completely invalidate a person's fast?
While the person is not required to physically make up the fasting day, the Prophet pbuh taught that engaging in perjury destroys the spiritual reward of the fast. Allah has no need for a person to abstain from food if they cannot abstain from false testimony.
Will the testimony of a perjurer ever be accepted again?
Generally, the testimony of a known perjurer is permanently rejected by Islamic courts because they have lost their legal integrity (Adalah). It can only be potentially restored after a long period of proven, sincere repentance and flawless conduct.
Why is the spread of perjury considered a sign of the Hour?
The Prophet pbuh indicated that as the Day of Judgment approaches, moral corruption will rise. The widespread normalization of perjury and the suppression of the truth signal a society that has lost its fear of Allah and its commitment to justice.
