Where Did the Companions Migrate Before the Hijrah to Medina, and Why?
1 The series of persecutions started late in the fourth year of Prophethood, slowly at first, but steadily accelerated and worsened day by day and month by month until the situation got extremely grave and no longer tolerable in the middle of the fifth year,
2 It was at that approximate time that Surah Al-Kahf was revealed comprising definite answers to the questions with which the polytheists of Makkah constantly pestered the Prophet (Peace be upon him) after they had help from the Jews to verify the prophethood of the Messenger of Allah.
3. It was arranged and well-managed by Allah that these questions, which originate from the cunningness of the Jews, included three stories, in which there are eloquent references from Allah to His faithful subjects. and they are as follows:
A -The story of the Companions of the Cave implies implicit guidance for the believers to immigrate from places of disbelief and aggression when fear of strife about the true religion, putting one’s faith in Allah:
( Since you have distanced yourselves from them and what they worship besides Allah, take refuge in the cave. Your Lord will extend His mercy to you and accommodate you in your ordeal.”) “, it indicates that one’s survival would be by distancing oneself from disbelief and its people even if it were in a bare hollow cave in the mountain (cave).
B - Next, there is the story of Al-Khidr and Moses (Peace be upon him) in a clear and delicate reference that fate is driven by the Will of Allah Almighty, and not all that appears evil is evil in fact, but it may be evil in appearance, but it is destined for good, and this carries several meanings, including what you are in, although it is ostensibly harmful, its consequence is good, and it indicates that the polytheistic tyrants - if they do not believe - they will be defeated before the weak Muslims.
C Furthermore, there is the story of Dhul-Qarnain (The Two Horned One), the powerful ruler of the East and West. This story states that to Allah belongs the earth and His righteous servants will inherit it. And the true salvation is in believing in Allah. It also says that Allah sends a righteous man every now and then to protect the weak from the tyrants of this world (Ya2jouj and Magog). It also states that the righteous are more entitled to inherit this earth.
4. It was clear through this education of faith that Allah Almighty prepares His virtuous servants for something that will happen. So, in spite of the continuous harm from the polytheists of Quraish, yet souls were present to comply with Allah’s command.
5 Surah Az-Zumar (Chapter 39 - The Crowds) was then revealed pointing directly to the migration and stating that the earth is spacious enough and the believers must not constrain themselves by the forces of tyranny and evil: ( Those who do good in this world will have a good reward. And Allah’s earth is spacious. Only those who endure patiently will be given their reward without limit.”)
6 The Prophet (Peace be upon him) had already known that Ashamah Negus, king of Abyssinia (Ethiopia), was a fair ruler who would not wrong any of his subordinates, so he commanded the believers to seek asylum in Abyssinia (Ethiopia), for fear for their religion and faith.
7 In Rajab of the fifth year of Prophethood, a group of twelve men and four women left for Abyssinia (Ethiopia). The leader of the emigrants was ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan and his wife Ruqaiyah [the daughter of the Prophet (Peace be upon him)]. With respect to these emigrants, the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said:
“They are the first people to migrate in the cause of Allah after Abraham and Lot (Peace be upon them) .”
8 They sneaked out of Makkah on a dark night and headed for the sea where two boats happened to be sailing for Abyssinia (Ethiopia), their destination, and they embarked them.
9 News of their intended departure reached Quraish, so some men were despatched in their pursuit, but the believers had already left the Port headed towards their secure haven and the Muslims resided in Abyssinia in the protection of a king who does not oppress anyone.
1. Escalation of Pagan Torture and Persecution |
In the fourth and fifth years of prophethood, after the public proclamation of Islam, Quraysh initiated a systematic campaign of persecution. Unable to execute high-status Muslims due to clan protection, they brutally tortured vulnerable converts, forcing the Prophet to seek a secure refuge for his followers.
2. The Prophetic Directive: A Land of Justice and Truth |
Prophet Muhammad instructed his companions: "If you were to go to the land of Abyssinia, for in it is a king under whom no one is wronged, and it is a land of truthfulness, until Allah brings relief from your distress." This demonstrated profound geopolitical awareness in selecting Christian Abyssinia.
3. The First and Second Migrations Across the Red Sea |
The first migration occurred in Rajab of the 5th year, consisting of twelve men and four women, including Uthman ibn Affan and the Prophet's daughter Ruqayyah. It was later followed by the larger second migration of over eighty men, led by Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, crossing the Red Sea to safety.
4. Ja'far's Defense and the Negus's Tears |
When Quraysh sent envoys bearing gifts to extradite the refugees, Ja'far delivered an eloquent speech describing pre-Islamic ignorance versus Islamic morality, and recited the opening of Surah Maryam. The Negus wept until his beard was wet, declaring: "This and what Jesus brought come from the very same lamp," granting them permanent protection.
Scholarly Insight: The migration to Abyssinia established the universal principle of seeking religious sanctuary against tyranny, showing that political justice transcends sectarian borders. Read more in the tafsir of Surah An-Nahl.
