The Core Differences |
1. Definitions of Israf and Tabdheer
There are several differences. Spendthrift (Israf) is to spend for something that is needed but spending too much of it. And wastefulness (Tabdheer) is to spend on something unnecessary. Also, wastefulness is to spend money unlawfully, whereas extravagance is to exceed the amount spent, whether it is money or otherwise, such as killing, talking and others.
2. Wastefulness and the Devils
(Give to close relatives their due, as well as the poor and needy travellers. And do not spend wastefully. Surely the wasteful are like brothers to the devils. And the Devil is ever ungrateful to his Lord.) Isra'a 17: 25 to 26. The meaning of ‘brothers of the devil’ means that he will be treated as the devils if the squanderer commits harm as do the devils, or they do whatever occurs to them.
3. Extravagance in Lawful Things
(O Children of Adam! Dress properly whenever you are at worship. Eat and drink, but do not waste. Surely He does not like the wasteful.) Al A'raf 7: 31. The Prophet pbuh said: ‘eat and drink and dress and give in charity without being spendthrift nor showing off’. And that indicates that extravagance is to exceed in something that is lawful, whereas wastefulness is to exceed in something unlawful.
4. The Middle Path
(Do not be so tight-fisted, for you will be blameworthy; nor so open-handed, for you will end up in poverty) Isra'a 17: 29. (They are those who spend neither wastefully nor stingily, but moderately in between) Al Furqan 25: 67.
Scholarly Insight: In Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh), the distinction between the two concepts is deeply rooted in the nature of the act itself. Israf is quantitative; it involves taking a completely halal action (like eating, buying clothes, or even using water for ablution) and doing it in excessive, unreasonable amounts. Tabdheer is qualitative; it involves taking wealth and placing it where it absolutely does not belong, such as spending on sins, illegal activities, or completely frivolous matters that bring no worldly or spiritual benefit. This is why Tabdheer earns the severe title of being "brothers to the devils," as it is a direct rebellion against the purpose of Allah's provisions.
Frequently Asked Questions |
What is the main difference between Israf and Tabdheer?
Israf means spending excessively on lawful things, like buying too much food. Tabdheer means spending money on unlawful or completely unnecessary things, misusing wealth entirely.
What does it mean to be "brothers to the devils"?
This phrase describes those who commit Tabdheer. By using Allah's blessings to commit sins or wastefulness, they mirror the ungrateful and rebellious nature of Satan, actively participating in his path of corruption.
Does Israf only apply to money?
No, Israf applies to exceeding the limits in many aspects of life. While it commonly refers to wealth, a person can also commit Israf in talking too much, eating too much, or overreacting in arguments.
