Is it allowed to eat forbidden food in cases of starvation?
هل يسمح للذي كاد يموت من الجوع أن يأكل من الطعام المحرم؟
Yes, it is permitted under strict conditions.
He can eat enough to keep him alive until he gets to the un-forbidden food.
(He has only forbidden you to eat carrion, blood, swine, and what is slaughtered in the name of any other than Allah. But if someone is compelled by necessity - neither driven by desire nor exceeding immediate need - they will not be sinful. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.)
[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:173]
يسمح له أن يأكل ما يسد جوعه ويحفظ حياته دون الإسراف في الأكل حتى يجد الطعام الحلال.
Scholarly Insight: This verse establishes the famous Islamic legal maxim: "Necessities make forbidden things permissible" (الضرورات تبيح المحظورات). However, scholars clarify that this is followed by another rule: "Necessity is measured by its extent" (الضرورة تقدر بقدرها). This means the permission is temporary and limited to what is required to prevent death.
