First, Yusuf pbuh gave his brothers who were present a measure of supplies equal to what he was giving everyone else; because he wanted to be fair to everyone, and he did not give anyone more than a camel load. He asked them about their situation, and they told him that they had a brother, Benjamin, who had stayed behind with his father.
Second: he told them, “Bring me your brother on your father’s side”. He enticed them and at the same time warned them if they don’t get their brother. He enticed them by saying : “Do you not see that I give full measure and I am the best of hosts?”, i.e. the best to offer hospitality and honour to those who come to him
Third: He warned them that if they didn’t bring their brother by saying: “But if you do not bring him to me ˹next time˺, I will have no grain for you, nor will you ever come close to me again.””, i.e. do not come without your brother, because if you do, there will be no supplies for you. He knew that they had no choice but to bring their brother.
Fourth: The brothers knew from their father’s behavior that they would not be allowed to bring their brother easily, so they said “We will try to convince his father to let him come.“, i.e., we will do our best to ask him, because Yaqoub – peace be upon him – was fond of him and did not tolerate his absence, as he was close to him after Yusuf’s disappearance , so he needed much convincing to send him with them.
Fifth: In order for Yusuf pbuh to ensure that they will return to him, he ordered the servants to return the money they paid for the provisions they bought, and to put them in their saddlebags. Because when they found the money, they would be embarrassed and they would go back to return it, and they could bring their brother with them, which is mentioned. “Yusuf pbuh ordered his servants to put his brothers’ money back into their saddlebags so that they would find it when they returned to their family and perhaps they would come back”
(And Yusuf pbuh’s brothers came and entered his presence. He recognized them but they were unaware of who he really was. When he had provided them with their supplies, he demanded, “Bring me your brother on your father’s side. Do you not see that I give full measure and I am the best of hosts? But if you do not bring him to me ˹next time˺, I will have no grain for you, nor will you ever come close to me again.” They promised, “We will try to convince his father to let him come. We will certainly do ˹our best˺.” Yusuf pbuh ordered his servants to put his brothers’ money back into their saddlebags so that they would find it when they returned to their family and perhaps they would come back) Yusuf 12: 58-62
