How Did the Ship Noah Built Sail When There Was No Water?
Allah caused rain to fall and water from the earth to flow until there was a flood. Noah sailed on the ship with all the believers and the animals he carried. The disbelievers drowned in the water. "So, he cried out to his Lord, 'I am helpless, so help me!' So, We opened the gates of the sky with pouring rain, and caused the earth to burst with springs, so the waters met for a fate already set. And We carried him on a construction of planks and nails, sailing under Our watchful Eyes, a fair punishment on behalf of the one they denied" (Surah Al-Qamar 54:10-14).
1. A Cry of Helplessness Answered by Allah |
Nuh's cry, "I am helpless, so help ˹me˺!" (54:10), came after 950 years of preaching, covered in How Long Did Nuh Stay Among His People? Allah's response is overwhelming, opening the sky and the earth together when His appointed command came.
2. A Vessel Built for Water That Did Not Yet Exist |
The ship Nuh built at Allah's command, covered in Why Did Allah Instruct Nuh to Build a Ship?, was constructed on dry land, well before any flood existed to justify it in the eyes of his mocking people. The flood's sudden arrival, from both sky and earth simultaneously, is precisely what made that vessel necessary.
3. Sailing "Under Our Watchful Eyes" |
Surah Al-Qamar 54:14 describes the ship as sailing "under Our watchful Eyes," the same divine supervision mentioned when the ship was first commanded to be built. This continuity, from construction to the actual voyage, reinforces that the ship's safe passage through mountain-high waves was never left to chance.
Scholarly Insight: Ibn Kathir, on the floodwater in 54:12: “Every region of the earth gushed forth, so that even ovens, which are places for fires, became flowing springs.” Al-Sa'di explains the ark's movement in 11:41: “It sails in Allah's name, comes to rest in Allah's name, and sails through His subjection of it and His command.” See the command to build Nuh's ark. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-Qamar.
