Allah made an appointment for Moses to come, and bring with him the best men among the Children of Israel, and ask Allah the Almighty to accept their repentance. When Moses reached Mount Al-Tur, a cloud covered him, and he began to speak to his Lord while the best men were listening, so they said, “We will never believe you until we see Allah with our own eyes” They wanted to make sure that Moses was actually speaking to his Lord. As a result, they were seized by an earthquake, so they all died. Then, Moses apologized to Allah the Almighty by saying, “Will You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done?”
Moses, peace be upon him, chose 70 men from amongst the most pious people and the elders of the Children of Israel. He returned with them to Mount Tur to apologize to Allah the Almighty for worshipping the calf the Sâmiri made for them. They stood back waiting for Moses who entered into a low-lying cloud to speak with his Lord. When he came back to them, instead of returning to Allah with repentance and apologizing to Him, they told Moses that they would not deeply believe in Allah and follow him until they saw Allah with their own eyes,
(And ˹remember˺ when you said, “O Moses! We will never believe you until we see Allah with our own eyes,” so a thunderbolt struck you while you were looking on.) (Al-Baqarah 2: 55)
The ground shook beneath them, and the seventy men were struck by thunderbolt. They fell to the ground dead. Moses was astounded, and he immediately wondered what he would say to the Children of Israel after the best seventy men fell dead. Moses realized at that moment that there was no hope in the Children of Israel, and so he turned to Allah the Almighty.
(Moses chose seventy men from among his people for Our appointment and, when they were seized by an earthquake, he cried, “My Lord! Had You willed, You could have destroyed them long ago, and me as well. Will You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is only a test from You—by which You allow whoever you will to stray and guide whoever You will. You are our Guardian. So forgive us and have mercy on us. You are the best forgiver.) (Al-A’araf 7:155)
(And ˹remember˺ when you said, “O Moses! We will never believe you until we see Allah with our own eyes,” so a thunderbolt struck you while you were looking on.( (Al-Baqara 2:55)
When Moses, peace be upon him, beseeched Allah for the seventy men who were killed, Allah brought them back to life, and for many years, the Children of Israel wandered about in the desert and wastelands.
(Then We brought you back to life after your death, so that perhaps you would be grateful.) (Al-Baqarah 2: 56
