Reflections on the Name of Allah: Al-Muqaddim.

The Expediter, The Promoter, The One who puts things in their right places. He who promotes or advances. This includes fostering high-ranking servants with substantial incentives.

First Interpretation – The Promoter:
The first meaning is the promoter. Imam al-Ghazali mentions that the one who is brought close to Him is promoted. They have been given guidance and shown mercy. This includes the angels, prophets, friends, and scholars. ٍSo Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ ‘brings forth’ some through worship and seeking His approval and guidance.

Second Interpretation –
The second interpretation is that Al-Muqaddim is the one who expedites. He can make something happen sooner and be accomplished more quickly. For example, we know Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ has proportioned our rizq for us as “(inscribed) in Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz (The Preserved Tablet)” (Qur’an 85:22). But from our perspective, through du’a and other actions which are beloved to Him, we can have our rizq expedited and increased. But from Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ perspective, there has been no change in the prescribed tablet.

So in many ways, the believer benefits from knowing that Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is Al-Muqaddim. He has the power to bring forth much sweetness in our life. It could be that marriage you’re searching for, the job that pays well and enables your family to be supported, or a beautiful, healthy child that you desire. Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ provides for all. Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah says: ‘I am just as My slave thinks I am, (i.e., I can do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if He remembers Me.

(O Allah, forgive me what I have sent before me and what I have left behind me, what I have concealed and what I have done openly, what I have done in excess, and what You are better aware of than I. You are the One Who sends forth and You are the One Who delays. There is none worthy of worship but You. ) Reference: Muslim 1/534.

Understanding this helps cultivate patience and trust in Allah’s plans, encouraging believers to persevere through times of apparent delay or hardship.

“And say not of anything, ‘I shall do such and such thing tomorrow,’ Except [with the saying], ‘If Allah wills'” (Quran 18:23-24)

This verse reminds us of the importance of recognizing Allah’s sovereignty over time and events. Reflect on the stories from the Quran and Hadith, such as the timing of Prophet Yusuf’s (Joseph) rise to power in Egypt, which was not only perfect for him but also salvation for the people during the famine. Such narratives demonstrate that divine timing ensures that outcomes serve a greater good that may not be immediately apparent.

Al-Muqaddim: Empowerment through Divine Preference

The divine attribute of Al-Muqaddim, The Expediter, embodies empowerment that transcends conventional societal norms. “Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – their Lord will guide them because of their faith.” (Quran 10:9)

For instance, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), who was an orphan and initially a shepherd, was chosen by Allah to become the leader of nations and a mercy to the worlds. His elevation was entirely due to his unparalleled devotion, trust in Allah, and impeccable character, rather than any material or tribal advantage.

Moreover, this empowerment serves as a strong motivational force for believers. It drives them to strive for moral excellence and deepens their spiritual pursuits, knowing that their sincere efforts can lead to divine acknowledgment and support. This realization encourages a believer to maintain a high standard of ethics and to pursue a path filled with good deeds, always conscious that Allah is watching and that He rewards those who earnestly seek His approval.

Ultimately, the empowerment through divine preference reinforces a fundamental Islamic teaching: that all power and success come from Allah. He is Al-Muqaddim, who can elevate individuals in unexpected and profound ways, and this capability should inspire every believer to seek His favor above all else.

Al-Muqaddim: The Facilitator of Spiritual Growth

Allah as Al-Muqaddim not only facilitates worldly success but more crucially, orchestrates conditions for profound spiritual growth. Through divine arrangement, believers encounter situations that challenge their faith, prompting personal development and deeper reliance on Allah.

“And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.” ( Al-Ankabut 29:69)

This verse emphasizes that the path to spiritual elevation is intertwined with challenges and striving in the path of Allah. Whether it’s through overcoming personal trials or navigating through moral dilemmas, these experiences are divinely designed to enhance one’s spiritual capacity and understanding. Consider how challenges like illness, loss, or moral tests can lead to a deeper appreciation of Allah’s mercy and a more profound commitment to His path.
