Reflections on the Name of Allah: Al-Muhsee

The Counter, The Reckoner, The One whom the count of things is known to him.

Allah is Al-Muhsi, the One who takes all things into account and understands the specifics of each change or instant. He understands all and has knowledge about everything.

Referring to Allah (سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ) as “Al-Muhsi,” meaning the All-Enumerating, the Numberer, or the Counter, highlights an aspect of His divine knowledge and awareness. This attribute emphasizes not just knowing all things but also meticulously keeping track of every detail, counting and numbering each aspect of existence.

When we say Allah is Al-Muhsi, we imply that His knowledge encompasses not only the present reality but also the potentialities and possibilities of every event and entity. This understanding suggests that Allah’s knowledge is not confined to what has happened or what is happening but extends to what could have happened or what might happen. He comprehends the infinite permutations and combinations of events and their consequences.

“So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.” (Az-Zalzalah 99:7-8)
