Reflections on the Name of Allah: Al-Wajid

The Unfailing, The Finder.

The name Al-Wajid, as an attribute of Allah Almighty, has two associated meanings:

• The Finder: Al-Wajid refers to Allah as “The Finder.” This emphasizes Allah’s attribute of being resourceful and all-knowing. In Arabic, “wajada” (وَجَدَ) means “to find.” When we attribute this to Allah, it signifies that nothing escapes His knowledge or awareness. He is not limited in His ability to find or discover anything, whether it’s hidden, apparent, past, present, or future. This attribute underscores Allah’s complete awareness and control over all things.
• The Realizer: Another meaning associated with Al-Wajid is “The Realizer.” This extends beyond merely finding something to encompass the concept of actualization or manifestation. Allah is not only aware of all things but also brings them into existence or fruition according to His will. He is the one who makes things happen and brings about their reality. This aspect of the name emphasizes Allah’s omnipotence and the fact that He is the ultimate cause behind all occurrences in the universe.

Both meanings of Al-Wajid highlight Allah’s perfection and sovereignty. He is not only aware of everything but also has the power to bring about whatever He wills. This name encapsulates the profound concept of Allah’s knowledge, resourcefulness, and ability to manifest His will in the universe.

The name Al-Wajid does not appear explicitly in the Qur’an, but many verses describe this quality or attribute of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ.

(أَلَمْ يَجِدْكَ يَتِيمًۭا فَـَٔاوَىٰ)

(Did He not find you as an orphan then sheltered you?) Ad-Duha 93:6

Al-Wajid: The Ultimate Finder and Knower of All Things

أَلَمْ يَجِدْكَ يَتِيمًۭا فَـَٔاوَىٰ

“Did He not find you as an orphan then sheltered you?” (93:6)

This verse highlights Allah’s encompassing knowledge and care, finding and guiding even in the most vulnerable states. It reassures us that no matter our circumstances, Allah’s awareness of our situation is perfect, and His ability to provide and support is unfailing. This concept encourages Muslims to place their trust in Allah’s perfect knowledge and resourcefulness, knowing that He sees and knows all our needs and circumstances.

Al-Wajid: Realizing Divine Will and Manifesting Reality

Al-Wajid not only finds but also realizes and manifests His will. This aspect of the divine name underscores Allah’s role as the one who actualizes what He wills in the universe. When we understand Al-Wajid as the Realizer, we acknowledge that every occurrence, every creation, and every event is by Allah’s will and command. This is a powerful reminder of Allah’s omnipotence and His role as the ultimate cause behind all that happens.

Reflect on Surah Ya-Sin (يس):

إِنَّمَآ أَمْرُهُۥٓ إِذَآ أَرَادَ شَيْـًٔا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ

“His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.” (36:82)

This verse illustrates Allah’s supreme power to bring anything into existence effortlessly. For Muslims, recognizing Allah as Al-Wajid means acknowledging that He is behind every aspect of reality. This understanding helps believers to see the divine hand in their lives, instilling a sense of purpose and gratitude for the divine orchestration of events.

Trusting in Al-Wajid: The Resourceful Provider in Modern Times

In our fast-paced, often unpredictable world, the name Al-Wajid holds a special relevance. It reassures us of Allah’s role as the resourceful provider who finds and creates ways for His servants. In moments of difficulty and uncertainty, reflecting on Al-Wajid can bring immense comfort and hope.

Consider the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) when he was cornered by the sea with Pharaoh’s army approaching. In that moment of seeming hopelessness, Allah provided a way out, demonstrating His resourcefulness and control over all situations. This is encapsulated in Surah Ash-Shu’ara (الشعراء):

فَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْبَحْرَ ۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍۢ كَٱلطَّوْدِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

“Then We inspired to Moses, ‘Strike with your staff the sea,’ and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.” (26:63)

For contemporary Muslims, this story and the name Al-Wajid offer a reminder that Allah’s resourcefulness is beyond our imagination. When faced with challenges, whether they be personal, professional, or spiritual, we can trust in Al-Wajid to provide a way. This deepens our reliance on Allah and encourages us to seek His guidance and support in all aspects of life.
