Surah At-Tahrim is the 66th chapter of the Quran, containing 12 verses. Revealed in Madinah, it takes its name from its opening verse, in which Allah addresses the Prophet regarding something lawful that he had denied himself out of consideration for his wives. The surah instructs the Prophet’s household to turn to Allah in repentance, commands the believers to guard themselves and their families from a Fire fueled by people and stones, and closes by setting the disbelieving wives of the prophets Nuh and Lut against the believing wife of Pharaoh and Maryam, mother of Jesus, as examples for believing men and women alike. Below you can read the full Surah At-Tahrim in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.

Tafsir of the Verses

{ يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِيُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ مَآ أَحَلَّ ٱللَّهُ لَكَ تَبْتَغِي مَرْضَاتَ أَزْوَاجِكَ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ }
{ يٰأَيُّهَا } { مَرْضَاةَ } { أَزْوَاجِكَ }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 1
1. This verse was revealed following a minor incident which led the Messenger (peace be upon him) to vow to forbid himself honey (it was said that he swore never to have contact with his slave woman Maria al-Kubtia again ).
The first version is, according to Aisha, the wife of the Messenger, as follows: The Prophet liked to drink honey. After the afternoon prayers, he would visit his wives and would stay with Zainab bint Jahesh and drink honey. His wives Aisha and Hafsa conspired against him and decided to tell him separately when he came to their quarters: “We smell the bad odour of maghafeer ( a kind of glue from certain trees). Have you eaten maghafeer?” Aisha and Hafsa were closer to each other than the other wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Thus when the Messenger of Allah went to Hafsa, she asked him: “Did you eat maghafeer?” He said: “No, but I drank honey at Zainab bint Jahsh’s. I will not drink it again. I swear to that, but do not tell anyone about this.” But she did tell Aisha what had happened. According to the second version of this story, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had sexual intercourse with his slave woman, Maria, the mother of his son Abraham, in one of his wife’s quarters. She said: “O Messenger of Allah! In my house, and on my bed?” The Prophet then forbade himself from having relations with Maria. Thus, Allah Almighty revealed this verse gently reproving the Prophet (peace be upon him) for prohibiting what Allah has made lawful for him, and He commanded him to expiate for his oath, which he did.
The meaning of this verse is: O you prophet, why do you prohibit for yourself what Allah has made lawful? Do you seek by that to please your wives? Allah Almighty is All-Forgiving for the faults of those who repent. He has forgiven you for abstaining from what He has made lawful. He is Merciful to His servants who believe and does not punish them for the faults they have repented of.
{ قَدْ فَرَضَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ تَحِلَّةَ أَيْمَانِكُمْ وَٱللَّهُ مَوْلاَكُمْ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ }
{ أَيْمَانِكُمْ } { مَوْلاَكُمْ }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 2
2. Allah Almighty has permitted you to liberate yourselves of your pledges by expiation. So you, O Messenger of Allah, should expiate for the oath which you took forbidding yourself what Allah made lawful for you. Allah is your Protector, O believers, and He knows what is good for you so He legislates it. He is Wise in His laws, commandments and management. The Prophet expiated for his oath by freeing a slave.
{ وَإِذْ أَسَرَّ ٱلنَّبِيُّ إِلَىٰ بَعْضِ أَزْوَاجِهِ حَدِيثاً فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَتْ بِهِ وَأَظْهَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ عَرَّفَ بَعْضَهُ وَأَعْرَضَ عَن بَعْضٍ فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَهَا بِهِ قَالَتْ مَنْ أَنبَأَكَ هَـٰذَا قَالَ نَبَّأَنِيَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْخَبِيرُ }
{ أَزْوَاجِهِ }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 3
3. The Messenger (peace be upon him) disclosed in confidence a matter to his wife Hafsa. He said that he drank honey at his wife Zainab’s and he vowed never to drink it again, but that she should not tell anyone about it. But when Hafsa divulged what the Prophet had confided in her to Aisha, Allah Almighty made known to His Messenger that Hafsa had disclosed what had been told to her in confidence. The Messenger (peace be upon him) informed Hafsa of part of the conversation which she had disclosed (that he had drunk honey at Zainab bint Jahsh’s home, and that he would never drink it again). He concealed from her the other part which she had disclosed (that he had sworn never to touch it and that she should tell no one). He did not tell her all as a noble gesture so as not to embarrass her. When he repeated to Hafsa the conversation between her and Aisha, she asked him, “Who told you this?” believing that it was Aisha herself who had told the Prophet and exposed her. He said: “My Lord did. He knows all secrets and private consultations. He knows all that is in existence.”
{ إِن تَتُوبَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ فَقَدْ صَغَتْ قُلُوبُكُمَا وَإِن تَظَاهَرَا عَلَيْهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ مَوْلاَهُ وَجِبْرِيلُ وَصَالِحُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمَلاَئِكَةُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ ظَهِيرٌ }
{ تَظَاهَرَا } { مَوْلاَهُ } { صَالِحُ } { الْمَلاَئِكَةُ }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 4
4. Allah Almighty addressed this verse to the two wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him), who had conspired against him (Hafsa and Aisha). He says: “If you turn in repentance for your fault and cease to oppose the Messenger, your hearts will be inclined to good, and thus you will have fulfilled your obligation towards the Messenger of Allah in showing respect to Him and honouring him for his noble standing.”
{ عَسَىٰ رَبُّهُ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبْدِلَهُ أَزْوَاجاً خَيْراً مِّنكُنَّ مُسْلِمَاتٍ مُّؤْمِنَاتٍ قَانِتَاتٍ تَائِبَاتٍ عَابِدَاتٍ سَائِحَاتٍ ثَيِّبَاتٍ وَأَبْكَاراً }
{ أَزْوَاجاً } { مُسْلِمَاتٍ } { مُّؤْمِنَاتٍ } { قَانِتَاتٍ } { تَائِبَاتٍ } { عَابِدَاتٍ } { سَائِحَاتٍ } { ثَيِّبَاتٍ }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 5
5. Allah Almighty warned them that if the Prophet should divorce them, Allah would give him in exchange wives who were better Muslims and more believing than them and who would refrain from committing faults and who would be more obedient to the Messenger’s commands, either previously married or virgins.
{ يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ قُوۤاْ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَاراً وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلْحِجَارَةُ عَلَيْهَا مَلاَئِكَةٌ غِلاَظٌ شِدَادٌ لاَّ يَعْصُونَ ٱللَّهَ مَآ أَمَرَهُمْ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ }
{ يٰأَيُّهَا } { آمَنُواْ } { مَلاَئِكَةٌ }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 6
6. O you who believe in Allah, His angels, Books and messengers! Obey Allah and fear disobeying Him. Command your families to invoke and fear Him, and teach them what Allah has commanded and what He has forbidden in order to save them, as well as yourselves, from Hellfire, whose fuel is unbelieving men and stones. Appointed to it are hard, rough angels who do not disobey Allah’s commands and do precisely as He has ordered.
{ يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لاَ تَعْتَذِرُواْ ٱلْيَوْمَ إِنَّمَا تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ }
{ يٰأَيُّهَا }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 7
7. When the unbelievers are thrust into the Fire on Judgement Day they are told: “Do not make excuses for disbelieving and for your evil deeds. The time for excuses has passed. You will get a requital for your deeds in your life on earth.”
{ يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ تُوبُوۤاْ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوْبَةً نَّصُوحاً عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَن يُكَفِّرَ عَنكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ وَيُدْخِلَكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلأَنْهَارُ يَوْمَ لاَ يُخْزِى ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّبِيَّ وَٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ مَعَهُ نُورُهُمْ يَسْعَىٰ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَبِأَيْمَانِهِمْ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ أَتْمِمْ لَنَا نُورَنَا وَٱغْفِرْ لَنَآ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ }
{ يٰأَيُّهَا } { جَنَّاتٍ } { ٱلأَنْهَارُ } { آمَنُواْ } { بِأَيْمَانِهِمْ }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 8
8. Allah Almighty commands the believers to turn in sincere repentance to Allah to efface all their previous evil deeds. (The Prophet was asked about “the sincere repentance” and he said: “It is to repent for a fault one has committed and ask Allah’s forgiveness, and never do it again.”) (Reported by Ibn abi Hatem ).
Allah Almighty informs the believers that if they turn to Him in sincere repentance, He will forgive them. Furthermore on Judgement day He will admit them by His Mercy to gardens in which rivers run on all sides. It is the Day on which He will raise the rank of His holy Messenger as well as that of the believers with him. He will give them a light to go before them as they walk carrying their Books in their right hands. They will ask Allah to retain their light and not extinguish it until they have crossed the path. They will also ask Him to forgive their previous faults and say: “Our Lord! You are capable of everything, and nothing incapacitates You.”
{ يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ ٱلْكُفَّارَ وَٱلْمُنَافِقِينَ وَٱغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَمَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ }
{ يٰأَيُّهَا } { جَاهِدِ } { ٱلْمُنَافِقِينَ } { مَأْوَاهُمْ }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 9
9. O Prophet! Strive hard against the unbelievers who stand with arms in the way of spreading the call to Islam. Fight them mercilessly. Fight those hypocrites who feign Islam while their hearts are filled with doubt and disbelief. They plot and conspire against the believers; therefore, be severe with them, threaten them, expose them and show them that evil is their destiny and their refuge. He who does not repent and return to Allah asking forgiveness, His destiny will be Hellfire. What an evil destiny!
{ ضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلاً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ ٱمْرَأَتَ نُوحٍ وَٱمْرَأَتَ لُوطٍ كَانَتَا تَحْتَ عَبْدَيْنِ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا صَالِحَيْنِ فَخَانَتَاهُمَا فَلَمْ يُغْنِيَا عَنْهُمَا مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيْئاً وَقِيلَ ٱدْخُلاَ ٱلنَّارَ مَعَ ٱلدَّاخِلِينَ }
{ ٱمْرَأَتَ } { صَالِحَيْنِ } { ٱلدَّاخِلِينَ }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 10
10. Allah gives an example of the unbelievers and the hypocrites who mix with the believers and deal with them. But they do not benefit like the faithful believers do from the exhortations, evidence and proof; nor do they draw a lesson from the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were both wives to good prophets. However, they did not benefit from the faith, guidance and good which their respective husband called to. They did evil deeds which showed betrayal and disbelief: for, Noah’s wife accused her husband of madness, while Lot’s wife guided her people to his guests so that they could commit atrocities. Allah destroyed them with their people and their destination will be in the Fire in the Hereafter. They will not benefit from being close to two of Allah’s prophets nor from their relationship with them. They will be told: “Enter the fire with those who enter it.”
{ وَضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلاً لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ ٱمْرَأَتَ فِرْعَوْنَ إِذْ قَالَتْ رَبِّ ٱبْنِ لِي عِندَكَ بَيْتاً فِي ٱلْجَنَّةِ وَنَجِّنِي مِن فِرْعَوْنَ وَعَمَلِهِ وَنَجِّنِي مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ }
{ آمَنُواْ } { ٱمْرَأَتَ } { ٱلظَّالِمِينَ }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 11
11. Allah Almighty gives another example to the believers and says that it will not harm them to associate with the unbelievers if the need rises. Pharaoh’s wife was a faithful believer while Pharaoh was a tyrant. Her husband’s disbelief did not harm her when she obeyed her Lord. Thus, people can know that Allah is Wise and Fair. He does not punish anyone for anyone else’s faults. Pharaoh’s wife asked her Lord to let her come under His mercy, to build a house for her close to Him in Paradise, to deliver her from Pharaoh and his wicked deeds, and from his oppressive people.
{ وَمَرْيَمَ ٱبْنَتَ عِمْرَانَ ٱلَّتِيۤ أَحْصَنَتْ فَرْجَهَا فَنَفَخْنَا فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِنَا وَصَدَّقَتْ بِكَلِمَاتِ رَبِّهَا وَكُتُبِهِ وَكَانَتْ مِنَ ٱلْقَانِتِينَ }
{ ٱبْنَتَ } { عِمْرَانَ } { بِكَلِمَاتِ } { ٱلْقَانِتِينَ }

Surah At-Tahrim: Verse 12
12. Allah Almighty gives another example to those who believe of Mary, daughter of Omran, and the honour which she received in life and in the Hereafter. Allah, her Lord, made her among the chosen ones. He sent to her a noble angel who appeared to her in human form. He entered her private place of retreat and she sought refuge in Allah from his evil. He announced to her the happy news of a son she would bear by a Word from Allah, and that he would be a holy prophet. The angel breathed into her the spirit of Allah and she bore Jesus. Mary believed in Allah’s laws and His Books which He sent down to His messengers and prophets and was one of the devoted servants who obey Allah Almighty.
