In the Name of Almighty Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Surah Ash-Shu’ara (The Poets) is the 26th chapter of the Quran, comprising 227 verses. It takes its name from the mention of “the poets” towards the end of the chapter, drawing a clear distinction between the divine, unalterable truth of the Quran and the imaginative, often erratic words of poets. The Surah extensively recounts the historical narratives of several prophets – including Moses, Abraham, Noah, Hud, Saleh, Lot, and Shu’ayb – highlighting a recurring pattern: the delivery of the divine message, the rejection by the arrogant, and the ultimate victory of truth. Below you can read the full Surah Ash-Shu’ara in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 3
3. Do not consume yourself with regret, O Mohammad, at seeing that your people fail to believe in what you have brought them on Allah ‘s behalf. (This is a consolation addressed to the Messenger concerning the obstinacy and doubt that he experienced on the part of his people, who treated him and Allah’s message as lies.)
4. If We wished, We could send down upon them from Heaven a sign which would oblige them to believe, as We once brandished a mountain over the children of Israel. But We do not wish to do that because We desire each man to believe of his own free will after having been convinced of the truth of that which the Messengers have communicated. We have sent down Books and Messengers as an irrefutable argument for mankind. (It is said that in this verse the word anakou -their necks – refers to their leaders and chiefs.)
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 5
5. Whenever a fresh revelation is sent to remind those who treat you as a liar, to recall them to the true religion, they refuse to heed it. They do not ponder it and do not even bother to understand it.
6. These idolaters treat the Lord’s truth as a lie, and then mock it. Let them be! For the time will come when they will see the consequences of their accusations of mendacity and their mockery, and they will receive their punishment. (And that may be during their life on earth or in the world to come.)
7. Why do they persist in denying the existence of Allah and in treating His messenger as a liar and Allah’s messages as lies, when it is Allah Almighty who created the Earth and brought forth plants and fruits of all kinds and all tastes, which delight all those who witness them and draw the attention of even the most distracted of men – do they not see all these things? If they had seen and pondered, they would have been guided towards faith in the One God, without any associate.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 8
8. For those who are blessed with intelligence, the capacity to bring forth from the soil plants of such magnificently various kinds is a sign of the power of the Creator to effect re-birth. For Him who can re-endow the formerly dead soil with life and bring forth from it plants, trees, harvests, and fruits, it will not be difficult to resurrect His creatures from their tombs on the Day of Judgement. But most people have ignored Allah’s signs and denied them and have not believed in Allah and have treated His messengers as liars.
{وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 9
9. Most certainly, Mohammad, your Lord, the Omnipotent whom no one can harm, determines all things and is merciful and compassionate towards His creatures. That is why He does not hasten the punishment of those who have disobeyed Him, but gives them time and waits. Then He seizes them with his omnipotent power. And He will wreak His revenge upon those who treat His messages as lies.
10. O Mohammad, tell your people the story of Moses (peace be upon him), when his Lord summoned him to ascend the mountain. He spoke to him and told him to go down to the unjust, who had done harm to themselves and to the children of Israel by treating them as slaves and slaughtering their male children.
11. Then Allah Almighty describes the unjust people to whom He had sent His prophet Moses, saying that He is referring to Pharaoh and the leaders of his kingdom. Allah Almighty said to Moses: “These unjust men, do they not comport themselves piously, do they not seek to avoid their Lord’s punishment, and do they not fear the penalties entailed by their injustice and their disbelief?”
{قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّيۤ أَخَافُ أَن يُكَذِّبُونِ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 12
12. Moses (peace be upon him) then said to his Lord that he feared that Pharaoh and his band of leaders, through their obstinacy and vanity, treated him as a liar.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 13
13. Moses feared that if he was treated as a liar his breast would seize up and he would stammer when he was arguing with them and inviting them to believe in Allah. Then he prayed his Lord to summon his brother Aaron and make him a prophet who could then steel his resolve and strengthen his hand.
14. Then he asked the Lord’s pardon for having killed a Copt and fled to Madian to avoid punishment. For this reason he feared that if he went to them alone they would kill him for having committed this crime.
15. Then Allah Almighty replied to him: “Fear nothing; We will strengthen your hand through your brother Aaron. Go then to Pharaoh, you and your brother, and bring him the signs that I have given you – with your staff in your hand. I will watch over you and see what happens. You are under My protection. You will be the victors.
17. “who commands you thus: ‘Free the children of Israel from your tyranny, cease tormenting them, for they are believers and the servants of Allah, and let them leave for the holy land in our company.’”
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 18
18. But Pharaoh answered Moses with scorn and indifference and said: “Are you not he whom we raised amongst us from childhood and who has received our gifts for these many years?
20. Then Moses replied: “I committed my infamous crime – the murder of a Copt – not knowing that the blow I had dealt him was mortal.” (It is said that what is meant here is that he committed the murder when he still belonged to the unbelievers, before Allah revealed His mission to him and made him His prophet.)
21. “Therefore I fled from you because I was afraid that you would capture me by force. It was then that my Lord chose me to carry out His mission, and granted me wisdom and force of judgement, and assigned me as a messenger to His people, and commanded me to come to see you and invite you to believe in Him. If you obey Him you will be saved; if you deny Him, you will be destroyed.
22. “You reproach me on account of your favours towards me and because you raised me in your household, whereas you subjugated the children of Israel and made slaves of them and burdened them with the most arduous tasks and slaughtered their sons. If my mother had not feared that I would be slaughtered, she would not have placed me in the casket and then placed it in the water, and I would not then have needed your favours nor would I have been raised by you. Your favours and my upbringing are as nothing when compared with what you did to the children of Israel.”
23. Pharaoh forced his people to worship his own person, and he said to them: “I do not recognize any divinity for you other than myself.” (See chapter 28- Al-Qasas (The Narration), 38.) When Moses (peace be upon him) him to worship Allah and told him that he was the messenger of the Lord of all things, Pharaoh replied with irony and scorn: “And what is this Lord of all things whose messenger you claim to be? What kind of reality does he have?”
24. Moses answered him: “Allah is the Creator of the heavens and the earth and of all that lies between, the Master and Lord of all things, without any associate. If you possessed the hearts of confident and clear-sighted believers, this answer would be of use to you; you would be guided and you would know that the majesty of Pharaoh is as nothing compared with the majesty of Allah Almighty.”
{قَالَ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُ أَلاَ تَسْتَمِعُونَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 25
25. Then Pharaoh turned towards the chief men around him and mocked Moses as a liar: “Do you not hear his claim that you have a God other than me?”
26. Moses (peace be upon him) continued to describe the greatness of Allah Almighty, saying: “He is your Lord, and He created you and your remotest ancestors.”
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 27
27. Then Pharaoh said to his chief men: “This man who claims to be a messenger to you and an emissary from the Lord of all things, is undoubtedly a madman incapable of reflection, for he claims that there is a Allah other than me.”
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 28
28. Then Moses said to him: “Allah is my Lord and yours, who created the rising sun in the east and the setting sun in the west; it is thus that the planets rise in the east and set in the west, if you understand what you see and the words that you hear. If you do not believe in Allah, then all of you deserve to be treated as madmen.”
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 29
29. When Pharaoh realized that he was beaten and that he had no more arguments at his disposal, he abandoned the debate and took refuge in his status and the force of his power, believing that these would serve him in vanquishing Moses and his brother; so he said to Moses: “If you adopt a deity other than me, I will most certainly put you in prison, and you know how wretched the conditions of my prisoners are.”
{قَالَ أَوَلَوْ جِئْتُكَ بِشَيءٍ مُّبِينٍ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 30
30. Moses spoke to Pharaoh gently, hoping for his conversion: “Will you still put me in prison if I can give you decisive and incontrovertible proof of the truth of my claim that have been sent to you on behalf of Allah Omnipotent, and when this miracle proves the greatness of Allah and His power and His wisdom?”
{قَالَ فَأْتِ بِهِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّادِقِينَ}
{ٱلصَّادِقِينَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 31
31. Then Pharaoh said to him: “Show me what kind of proof you have, if you are not lying about a miracle or a sign.”
34. Pharaoh immediately began to accuse Moses of lying, and he stubbornly said to the chief men around him: “Moses is a very clever and gifted magician. It is not a miracle.” Then he urged them to contradict Moses and not to believe in him.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 35
35. He told them that Moses was trying to dazzle them with his magic, and that he might in this way gain followers who would vanquish them, seize their territories, and cast them out of the land. “What then do you advise me to do?”
37. “Let them bring you our greatest, wisest magicians, to confront Moses and his brother and vanquish them through the same magic. In this way you will be the victor.” Pharaoh followed their advice, which was just as Allah intended: so that all the magicians and the people could come together and witness His signs and arguments, in broad daylight, publicly, in the presence of everyone.
38. Pharaoh arranged for the meeting of magicians and appointed a certain day.
{وَقِيلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلْ أَنتُمْ مُّجْتَمِعُونَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 39
39. The people were invited to attend the meeting between the magicians and Moses and his brother Aaron, and they urged one another to come and attend the famous festival on the appointed day.
40. They said: “Then we can follow the magicians when they gain the victory!” (They did not say: “Then we can follow the truth, whether the victory goes to the magicians or to Moses,” for they had the same religion as Pharaoh, their king.)
41. The magicians came to Pharaoh, who was seated on his throne surrounded by the leaders of his kingdom, his servants, and his soldiers. The magicians presented themselves before Pharaoh and demanded a reward if they were victorious over Moses and Aaron, saying: “Will there really be a reward for us, if we are the victors?”
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 43
43. When they met, on the appointed day, in front of Pharaoh and the crowd of people, the magicians asked Moses if he was to cast his spells first or whether they should. He replied: “You; cast whatever spells you will.”
44. Then they threw down their cords and their staffs, bewitching the eyes of the onlookers, overwhelming them and practicing great magic, as is described in another verse (See chapter 7- Al-A’raf (The Heights), 116). The crowd saw what impressive magic the magicians could work and they found them superb, and so they boasted and believed that the victory was theirs and swore by the power of Pharaoh that they would be the conquerors.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 45
45. Then Moses threw down his staff which turned into an enormous serpent which fell upon the cords and staffs of the magicians and swallowed them up until it had devoured them all. All of this took place under the eyes of Pharaoh, his chief men, his soldiers, and the inhabitants of his kingdom.
46. The magicians knew that what Moses had worked was no magic, otherwise he would not have vanquished them. For they were magicians with great expertise in magic, and so they asserted that what Moses had worked was truly from Allah Almighty. They therefore prostrated themselves before the Lord of all things, repenting and asking forgiveness for having disbelieved, and for having practiced magic in order to oppose the truth which came from Allah.
47. They said: “We believe in the Lord of the universe, to whose worship Moses has invited Pharaoh.” And they proclaimed their conversion in front of Pharaoh and his chief men.
49. Pharaoh saw that he had suffered a major defeat in the presence of his people, his chief men, and his magicians. So he set himself stubbornly to traducing them, threatening the magicians and accusing them of having learned their magic from Moses, and of conspiring with Moses against him so that Moses might be victorious over them, and they had followed him. And he added: “How dare you believe in his God before I gave you permission?” Then he threatened to cut off opposite hands and legs, so that if the right hand was cut off, then the left leg would be cut off, and he threatened to crucify every single one of them on the trunks of date-palms.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 50
50. And they said to him: “That does not dismay us. That can do us no harm, and we are indifferent to your threats. For we will return to our Lord who never fails to grant His servants their reward, and who will be aware of everything that you do to us. We will find a greater reward at His hands.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 51
51. “We desire that Allah may forgive us the faults that we have committed in our past lives and the magic which you forced us to practice, since we were the first of all your people to believe in Moses and his message, to follow the truth, and to turn away from the blandishments of this earth.”
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 52
52. Moses (peace be upon him) remained in Egypt for some time, during which he established arguments and proofs against Pharaoh and his chief men; but so stubborn were these people that nothing remained for them but torment and torture. So Allah Almighty ordered Moses to leave Egypt, at night, with the children of Israel, and informed him that Pharaoh would pursue them, which was why He commanded him to make his way to a particular place. Moses therefore did as his Lord commanded him.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 53
53. When Pharaoh was informed of the departure of Moses and the children of Israel he was furious, and he sent messengers to assemble soldiers from every corner of his realm in order to pursue the children of Israel and to bring them back into the land of Egypt and prevent them from leaving again
{إِنَّ هَـٰؤُلاۤءِ لَشِرْذِمَةٌ قَلِيلُونَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 54
54. Pharaoh proclaimed to his people: “The children of Israel are a wretched band of people and far from numerous, so it will be very easy to conquer them and speedily quell their resistance.
{وَإِنَّهُمْ لَنَا لَغَآئِظُونَ}
{لَغَآئِظُونَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 55
55. “They have dishonoured us in disobeying our orders and trying to leave the land of Egypt without our permission, taking with them jewels which they have borrowed from the Copts.
{وَإِنَّا لَجَمِيعٌ حَاذِرُونَ}
{حَاذِرُونَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 56
56. “We should take care to deal with them all before their wickedness increases; it is in the nature of our nation to be wary and prudent in our affairs, and to act firmly.”
{فَأَخْرَجْنَاهُمْ مِّن جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ}
{فَأَخْرَجْنَاهُمْ} {جَنَّاتٍ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 57
57. Allah Almighty therefore led Pharaoh and his people forth from the delights of their lives, and thus they quit their lofty mansions, their splendid gardens, and their flowing fountains, so that Allah could destroy them by drowning them in the sea.
{وَكُنُوزٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 58
58. They left their treasures, their goods, and their glory in the life here below.
{كَذَلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا بَنِيۤ إِسْرَائِيلَ}
{وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا} {إِسْرَائِيلَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 59
59. And so Allah Almighty led Pharaoh and his people and his armies forth from the lands they inhabited, in order to make them perish in the sea, and caused the children of Israel to inherit the holy land, where there were gardens, springs, and delights similar to those which Pharaoh and his people had left behind them in Egypt. The children of Israel passed from a state of slavery and humiliation to one of liberty and delight.
61. When the two sides saw each other, Moses’ companions said that Pharaoh and his people had caught up with them and would certainly kill them, for they had reached the sea, so they could not continue to march and thus escape from Pharaoh and his armies.
{قَالَ كَلاَّ إِنَّ مَعِيَ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 62
62. Moses (peace be upon him) said to his people: “Pharaoh and his people will never succeed in catching up with us, for Allah Almighty commanded me to bring you to this place. Almighty Allah always keeps His promises and He will guide me along the true path towards what I must do so that we may be saved.”
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 63
63. Almighty Allah ordered Moses to strike the sea with his staff, so he struck it, and the sea opened up at Allah’s command; and on either side the banks were like mountains. (Ibn Abbas says: “The passage where the sea opened was like an immense gully between two mountains.”)
{وَأَزْلَفْنَا ثَمَّ ٱلآخَرِينَ}
{ٱلآخَرِينَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 64
64. Allah led Pharaoh and his armies to that place.
{وَأَنجَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُ أَجْمَعِينَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 65
65. Moses and his people passed through the place where the sea had divided and become dry land, and thus they were all saved.
{ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا ٱلآخَرِينَ}
{ٱلآخَرِينَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 66
66. Pharaoh and his armies pursued them and took the same passage, but when they were between the two banks the sea enveloped them on all sides and drowned them all.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 67
67. With all its marvels, its victory, and its signs of Allah’s support for believers, this story is a wondrous phenomenon and a decisive proof of Allah Almighty’s power and of Moses’ honesty; but most of the children of Israel did not believe it, although they had seen it with their own eyes.
{وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 68
68. Your Creator and Educator, O Mohammad, is the Omnipotent, and He is capable of avenging Himself on those who call His message a lie, and He is All-Merciful towards those who believe.
{وَٱتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ}
{إِبْرَاهِيمَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 69
69. Tell your people about their father Abraham (peace be upon him)- perhaps they will take him as an example to follow, in his fidelity, his confidence in Allah, his worship of Him without any associate, and his disavowal of idolatry and idolaters. Since he was wise even when he was very young, he disapproved of the worship of idols on the part of his father and all his people.
{إِذْ قَالَ لأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 70
70. He said to his father and his people: “What do you worship, and who are these idols you have chosen to worship although they do not deserve such veneration?”
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 71
71. In their vanity, they answered him: “We worship these idols to which we will remain loyal; we worship them and we invoke them to glorify and magnify them.”
72. Disapproving of their attitude, Abraham asked them incredulously and scornfully: “Do they hear your invocations while they are made of stone? What do they answer when you pray to them?
74. Then they admitted that the idols could do them neither good nor harm, but they had seen their ancestors worship them, kneeling before them and offering them sacrifices, so they had followed in their steps and worshipped them too.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 77
77. “Well, I disavow them all! I deny the divinity of any of them! I worship Allah alone, for He is the Master of the universe; there is no other divinity but Him.
{ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَنِي فَهُوَ يَهْدِينِ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 78
78. “It is He who created me and created all things, it is He who has guided His creatures towards Him. Thus everything follows the path that Allah has destined for him. It is He who guides me towards happiness in this life and in the afterlife.
81. “It is He who created me and He who will give me death when the hour comes for me to die, and will resurrect me on the Day of Resurrection, and no one else is capable of doing anything of that kind.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 82
82. “It is He whose pardon I crave on the Day of Judgement for my faults, my sins, and my shortcomings, and no one other than He can pardon faults either in this life or in the life beyond, for only He can do all that He wills.”
83. Then Abraham prayed to his Lord to grant him wisdom and sound judgement (“judgement” here is said to refer to prophecy), and to help him to obey his Lord so that he might be among those closest to Him and among those chosen to transmit His message.
84. He asked Allah that men might think well of him in future times, and remember him as a good example to follow, because of the good works Allah had led him to perform.
{وَٱجْعَلْنِي مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 85
85. And that his memory should always remain good here on earth after his death, and that Allah might designate him among the heirs of the delights of Paradise in the life beyond!
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 86
86. Abraham invoked Allah’s pardon for his father (for his father ascribed other divine associates to Allah, and was among those who went astray). (But Abraham disavowed his father when it became clear that the latter was an enemy of Allah, and he renounced the preceding invocation, as is mentioned in another verse: see chapter 9- Al-Tauba (Repentance), 114.)
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 87
87. He prayed his Lord to protect him from ignominy and humiliation of the Day of Resurrection, when Allah will resurrect His creatures and assemble them for Judgement.
{يَوْمَ لاَ يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلاَ بَنُونَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 88
88. On that day, the Day of Resurrection, when all creatures will be resurrected, worldly goods will not preserve an individual from Allah’s punishment, even if he wished to redeem himself with a world full of gold, just as neither his children nor anyone else will be of any use to him.
{إِلاَّ مَنْ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 89
89. Only faith and good works will serve him on that day when he comes before Allah with an upright heart, pure of idolatry, free of any stain or fault, being a faithful and sincere believer who has believed with certitude and honesty that there is no divinity other than Allah alone, without any associate, and that the Hour will inevitably sound, and that Allah will resurrect the dead from their tombs.
90. Paradise will be brought close to the pious and the blessed, until they see it with their own eyes. They will see it so decorated and so embellished that they will rejoice. Such pious people have longed for this moment and have believed that they would be gathered there.
91. Hell will be revealed to the unjust unbelievers and those who have gone astray, so that their eyes will see it; and this will hasten their regret and their misery.
93. “…And aside from Allah you worshipped them on earth, and you believed they would intercede with Allah in your favour. Can they today help either you or themselves? Can they preserve you or themselves from the punishment of Allah? You are condemned, you and all of them, to Hell. What a wretched destination and what a wretched abode!”
102. Thus they will wish at that moment that they could return to their lives here below; then they would obey Allah. But Allah Almighty knows that they are liars, and that even if they were sent back to earth they would resume their forbidden acts.
103. In the dispute between Abraham and his people and in the establishment of his argument against his people concerning the uniqueness of Allah, there is a sign and a clear proof that there is no divinity other than Allah, alone, without any associate. However, despite this evidence, most of them did not believe. (It could be that the meaning is as follows: most of those to whom you tell this story do not respond to your invitation.)
{وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 104
104. O Mohammad, it is indeed your Lord who is invincible, capable of avenging Himself on those who treat His message as a lie, but also all-Merciful. He has not destroyed men because of their disbelief and their sins, but has delayed His punishment and sent them messengers; if only they could repent and return towards Allah!
105. Allah Almighty speaks of Noah, who was the first messenger sent by Allah to the inhabitants of the earth. When men worshipped idols, Allah sent Noah to prohibit such worship and to warn them about Allah ‘s punishment. But his people treated him as a liar and continued to worship idols and associate other divinities with Allah. (Whoever treats one of Allah ‘s messengers as a liar treats all His messengers as liars; for their invitation has the same source and the same goal; and it for this reason that the present verse reads: “The people of Noah treated the messengers as liars.”)
106. Noah (Allah calls him ‘their brother’ because he belonged to this people) said to them: “Have you no fear when you worship divinities other than Him? Do you not wish to protect yourselves from His torment?
{إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 107
107. “I am a messenger from Allah to you, faithful to my mission. I communicate my Lord’s message to you without adding or omitting the least item.
108. “Obey me, therefore, by worshipping Allah alone, without any associate. Fear Allah, glorify Him by worshipping Him, and cease committing wrongful acts and sins.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 109
109. “I ask of you neither remuneration nor reward for having advised you by transmitting the Lord’s message to you; my hope is that my remuneration and my reward will come from Allah, the Master of the universe.
110. “Fear Allah, therefore; obey Him and follow my advice! For things have now been made clear to you: I have advised you well and I have faithfully transmitted Allah’s message to you.”
112. Then Noah said to them: “I invited these people to believe; they did, and they followed me. Therefore I must accept their act and communicate it to Allah Almighty. I am not obliged to seek to know their intentions or to rifle through their past deeds.
113. “Only my Lord is capable of reckoning up their accounts. Allah alone, Master of the universe, is well informed about them, and He alone will judge them according to their intentions and their deeds, either past or future. If only you were among those who feel and perceive with the mind’s eye!”
115. And he told them that Allah Almighty had sent him to warn all men. Whoever obeyed him and believed him would be with him, no matter whether he be rich or poor, honourable or wretched.
116. Noah stayed for some time among them, inviting them to come to Allah, day and night, secretly and publicly, but each time he repeated his invitation to them their disbelief and pride grew greater. Because Noah kept repeating his invitation, they became irritated with him and those who were with him. So the unjust among his people said: “If you do not stop inviting us to embrace your religion, Noah, we will stone you and kill you.”
118. Then he prayed to his Lord to make him and His ineluctable justice triumph over them, to save him and the believers who were with him from the punishment that He would visit upon the unbelievers who treated him as a liar.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 119
119. Allah therefore saved Noah and the believers who accompanied him in the ark that Allah had commanded him to build and to load with one pair of all animals and plants. It is for this reason that Allah describes the ark as ‘full,’ to signify that it was over-loaded.
121. Here indeed is a sign of Allah’s concern for His servants, the believers, and of His power to destroy the criminals who treated His message as a lie. Despite the warnings Noah gave his people about Allah’s punishment and his invitation to worship Allah Almighty night and day, in secret and in public, most of them did not believe in him.
{وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 122
122. Mohammad, your Lord is all-Powerful and Invincible, He is all-Wise in His decisions and His directions, and all-Merciful to His servants, so that He does not hasten the punishment of those who treat His message as a lie, but sends them messengers and delays their punishment; perhaps they will repent.
123. Allah Almighty says that He sent to the people of ‘Aad His messenger Hud, who lived in Ahqaf, formed of sandy hills near the Hadramaut; it was a people which succeeded that of Noah. Hud then invited them to worship Allah alone, without any associate, and to abandon the worship of idols; but they treated him as a liar.
127. “I ask of you no remuneration for having invited you, but hope to receive my remuneration and my reward from the Master of the universe who sent me to you.”
{أَتَبْنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِيعٍ آيَةً تَعْبَثُونَ}
{آيَةً}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 128
128. The nation of ‘Aad was made up of insolent people, very powerful and very violent, who possessed an abundance of goods, fields, water and children; and yet they worshipped other deities than Allah. So Allah sent Hud to them, who was one of their own, to transmit His message and His warning. He invited them to come to Allah and warned them against His vengeance and His punishment, saying: “Will you in your frivolity and vanity build an enormous monument on every hill, to show off your wealth and power?” Thus the prophet condemned their work which was of no use to them either in this world or in the next.
129. “You construct fortresses and enormous cisterns to collect water. Do you think you are eternal here on earth? That cannot be; all this is ephemeral and will disappear, just as it did for those who preceded you.”
130. “Their prophet treated them as violent and oppressive men, saying: “When you avenge yourself on someone and rage against them, you reveal in yourselves a boundless cruelty like that of tyrants who do not fear Allah.
{فَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 131
131. “Obey me, therefore, respond to my invitation, avoid that which I have warned you against, fear Allah and His vengeance in this world here below and the world to come.
135. “If you treat His message as a lie, if you shun me and refuse to follow my invitation to come to Allah, I fear Allah’s vengeance on you and His punishment on the Day of Resurrection, which will be a terrible day.”
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 136
136. His people answered him: “We care little for your exhortation and your invitation; we will not turn from the path that we have chosen, and we will not abandon our divinities – as is cited in another verse (see chapter 11- Hud (The Prophet Hud), 53).
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 137
137. “Our religion is merely the religion of our ancestors (the customs of our ancestors) and we follow the example of our fathers, and so we will live like them and die like them.
138. We believe that there will be neither resurrection nor judgment, neither Heaven nor Hell, and we will certainly not have to undergo torture for the acts we have committed.”
139. So they continued to treat their prophet Hud as a liar, to contradict him and to persist obstinately in their ways. Allah therefore caused them to perish by sending a cold and violent wind. They were violent, so Allah destroyed them with something even more violent than themselves. Here indeed is a sign and a lesson to be drawn for those who come after them; but most people do not believe.
140. Your Lord Allah is indeed Omnipotent and Invincible, but all-Merciful towards His servants, and so He wishes them to believe so that He can pardon them and erase their faults from the account.
141. Allah Almighty says that He sent His servant Saleh as a messenger to his people Thamud, Arabs living in the al-Hijr region, between the al-Cora valley and Syria – their homes are known as the cities of Saleh; they succeeded the people of ‘Aad and preceded the people of Abraham. Their prophet Saleh invited them to worship Allah Almighty alone, without any associate; but they treated him as a liar, and thus treated all the messengers as liars, for they all had the same origin and the same goal.
142. Their prophet Saleh said to them: “Do you not fear Allah for having associated other divinities with him? (Saleh was from Thamud, so Allah says that he is their brother.)
146. He then reminded them of Allah’s favours towards them: in food, gardens, agriculture, and fruits. Then he said: “Do you think that you will be allowed to live for long in this blessed state and this abundance and total security, whereas you are unbelievers, ungrateful for Allah’s favours, denying His commands?
{فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ}
{جَنَّاتٍ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 147
147. “In the midst of the gardens, the springs, and all your other advantages,
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 149
149. “… in your frivolity and insolence you dig into the mountains houses in which you have no need to live in. (The people of Thamud were expert at digging houses into the mountains.)
150. “Obey me therefore by worshipping Allah alone, abandoning disbelief and returning from your false path; shun tyranny and idolatry, and turn your attention towards that which is useful to you in the present life as well as hereafter, such as the worship of your Lord who created you and who provides you with food, and praise Him both morning and afternoon.
152. “… those great men who sow corruption on earth, who incite people to go astray, who divert people from the truth and who institute no useful reforms.” (It is said that these great men are a band of nine people who had plotted to kill Saleh and cut his camel’s throat.)
154. “You are just a human being like the rest of us. How is it that you receive revelations and we do not?” (Then they proposed that he summon forth a miracle for them, so that they might be sure that he was sincere in what he claimed to bring to them on Allah ‘s behalf.)
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 155
155. When Saleh asked them what kind of sign they wanted him to procure for them, they conferred together and then asked him to make a she-camel spring forth from the rocks, with such-and-such characteristics. At that moment, Saleh exacted a promise from them that they would believe in Allah if he carried out their request. Then he prayed to Allah to realize their demand, and the rock split and a domesticated she-camel emerged, with all the characteristics which they had specified. Some among them believed, others did not. Saleh then said to them: “Here is the camel you requested; she will drink at the well on an agreed day when no one else will have the right to do so, and you will drink at the well on another day when she will not.”
156. He warned them against Allah’s anger if they harmed the camel in any way. The camel remained with them for some time, and drank and ate from Allah ’s earth. Meanwhile they made use of her milk, which was abundant. As this lasted a long while, the most despicable among them got together and plotted to hamstring the camel and kill her.
157. They slit the camel’s throat. Their prophet Saleh then said to them: “Regale yourselves in your homes for three days, and then your punishment will fall on you.” They all regretted what the most despicable among them had done.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 158
158. On the day specified by Saleh they were struck by Allah ’s punishment. The earth trembled with a mighty earthquake, and an enormous cry came and tore their hearts. Then they got what they had not expected, and they perished, immobile in their homes. Most of them did not believe in the message which Saleh had brought them. Here is a clear sign and a lesson to be drawn by the wise.
{وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 159
159. Your Lord, Mohammad, is indeed all-Powerful and Invincible, and Merciful towards His servants.
{كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 160
160. Allah Almighty sent Abraham’s nephew Lot to a people – afterwards known as Lot’s people – living in the city of Sodom, in Jordan, south of the Dead Sea. He invited them to worship Allah alone, without any associate, and to obey the messenger Allah had sent to them; he forbade them to disobey Allah and to abandon themselves to a turpitude worse than that of any earlier peoples. But they treated him as a liar.
161. Lot therefore said to them: “Will you not act piously? Have you no fear of Allah’s punishment when you worship idols aside from Him who do you neither good nor harm, and when you persist in sin?
164. “I ask of you neither remuneration nor reward for having advised you and invited you to worship Allah Almighty, but I desire my salary and my reward to come only from the Master of the universe.”
165. He said to them: “Do you turn to men rather than women to satisfy your sexual desires? That is a vile sin that no creature before you has committed…
166. “Do you neglect your wives and all that Allah has created in them for you? You transgress and go beyond the limits Allah has set for you, and His holy commandments.”
167. So they answered: “Lot, if you do not stop inviting us to purify ourselves and abandon the ways of our ancestors, we will expel you from our city, along with your family, for you are one of those people who pride themselves on their purity.”
169. Then Lot prayed to his Lord: “Lord, save me and my family from the sins these people commit, and succour me through your grace and your compassion when you send your devastating punishment down upon these sinners.”
{فَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ أَجْمَعِينَ}
{فَنَجَّيْنَاهُ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 170
170. Allah Almighty therefore saved Lot and all his family…
171. … except for his wife, who was an elderly sinner and who remained with her people when they were exterminated, when Allah commanded Lot to escape at night. She died, therefore, with her people.
172. Allah Almighty ordered Lot to leave with his family at a certain hour of the night, and not to turn his head to look behind him when he heard the cry which would destroy the wicked people and their city. When Lot and his family had left the city and were some distance away, Allah caused his punishment to rain down on the city in the form of great clay tablets, so that the town was turned upside down and not one person survived.
174. Here is indeed a marvel and a proof of Allah ’s power, and a lesson to be drawn by the wise. However, most people do not believe in what Lot communicated to them.
{وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 175
175. Mohammad, your Lord is all-Powerful and Invincible, and He is all-Merciful towards His servants, for He wants them to believe so that He can pardon them.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 176
176. The people of al-Aykah were Madianites (al-aykah were bushy trees that they worshipped; Madian was in southern Jordan near Aqaba). Their prophet was Shuayb and he belonged to this people. Allah sent him to them in order to invite them to worship Allah and to abandon the disorder and the wickedness in which they wallowed. But they treated him as a liar.
177. Their prophet Shuayb therefore said to them: “Why do you not worship Allah and obey His commandments, and why do you not abandon the worship of idols and falsifying your weights and measures? If you do not desist, Allah will punish you with a terrible punishment.
180. “I ask of you no remuneration or reward for having advised you and invited you to worship Allah alone, without any associate; but I desire to receive my reward and my recompense from Allah, the all-Generous Master of the Universe.”
181. Then he told them to give full measure and not to defraud people. He forbade them to deceive people, saying: “When you measure or weigh, do not trick people: give them full measure. Treat others as you would like them to treat you, and give as you would like to receive.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 183
183. “Do not give people less than their due, do not sow disorder on earth, and do not block people’s paths” – as is written in another verse: “And do not place yourself in a threatening way on any path” (see chapter 7- Al-A’raf (The Heights), 86).
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 184
184. Shuayb warned them against the wrath of Allah and His vengeance, He who created them from nothing just like their ancestors, so that they could be reformers on earth.
186. “You are just a human being like us. Why is it that revelations come to you but not to us? We firmly believe that you are a liar, just pretending that Allah has sent you to us.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 187
187. “Make pieces of the sky fall on us as a punishment, if you are telling the truth when you claim to be Allah’s messenger.” (The people of Quraish said the same thing to the prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him): “Or else make pieces of the sky fall on us, if you are what you claim to be.”(“See chapter 17- Al-Isra (The Nocturnal Journey), 92.)
188. Shuayb said to them: “Allah best knows what you do, and so if you deserve punishment He will rain it down upon you; for He is not unjust towards you.” (If He wishes, He hastens your punishment, and if He wishes, He delays it until the appointed hour.)
189. They persisted in treating Shuayb as a liar, so Allah punished them for having done so and for having failed to recognize the signs of their Lord. He inflicted an intolerable heat on them for seven consecutive days, and nothing could protect them from it. Then a cloud appeared above them, and they all ran to shelter themselves under it in the hope of some rain or in search of cooling shade. When they were all gathered in its shadow, Allah sent them, instead of rain, a shower of enormous sparks of fire; the earth trembled under them and then came a devastating cry which destroyed them all on that day of terrible destruction.
190. The punishment visited on the people of al-Aykah is a sign and a proof of the power of Allah Almighty and a lesson to be drawn by the wise. However, most of them did not believe the message that Shuayb brought them.
{وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 191
191. O Mohammad, your Lord is all-Powerful in His vengeance. He is Invincible, and He is all-Merciful towards His servants who believe.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 192
192. The Quran, mentioned at the beginning of this chapter (“Whenever a fresh revelation is sent…” See verse 5 above), was sent down by the Master of the universe. He who revealed it to you, Mohammad, is the Master of the universe; His word is therefore truth and His decisions are absolute.
194. This Quran, Allah has revealed to you and the faithful communicating Spirit recited it to you until your heart came to know it and you imparted it to your people.
196. It was quoted in the Books sent to people in ancient times, transmitted by their prophets who once announced its coming; Allah had received their promise to believe in it.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 197
197. Is it not sufficient for them, as a proof of the veracity of this Quran, that the learned among the children of Israel find it mentioned in the Books that they study, as believers such as Abdullah Salamah have told you?
{وَلَوْ نَزَّلْنَاهُ عَلَىٰ بَعْضِ ٱلأَعْجَمِينَ}
{نَزَّلْنَاهُ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 198
198. Almighty Allah speaks of the obstinacy of the idolaters and the intransigence of their disbelief, saying: “If We had sent the Quran to a non-Arab who did not know the Arabic language and could not speak it…
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 199
199. “… and if such a person had read it, clearly and correctly, in the presence of the unbelievers of Quraish who knew that the man did not speak Arabic and could not have invented it, they would persist in obstinately disbelieving in it, and would constantly find pretexts for continuing in their disbelief and obstinacy.
{كَذَلِكَ سَلَكْنَاهُ فِي قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ}
{سَلَكْنَاهُ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 200
200. “We have caused disbelief and rejection to enter into the hearts of the criminal and obstinate unbelievers, and also into the hearts of those who resemble the unbelievers.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 201
201. “It is for this reason that they do not believe in the truth, are not affected by that which calls men to belief, and persist in their unbelief and their intransigence until they perceive the painful punishment that has been told to them. At that moment, they will believe, but their belief will not be of any use to them.
{فَيَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لاَ يَشْعُرُونَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 202
202. “Their punishment will come upon them suddenly when they least expect it.
203. “When their punishment comes upon them, they will wish that they might be granted some respite so that they might obey Allah. Every unbeliever and every unjust person will suffer remorse when he perceives Allah’s punishment.”
204. Allah Almighty replies to these criminals, reprimanding them and threatening them for having treated the noble Messenger (peace be upon him) as a liar and saying: “Make the punishment of Allah descend upon us, if you are among the truthful!” (See chapter 29- Al-Ankabut (The Spider), 29). Allah says: “Do they seek to hasten Our punishment which they mock?
{أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِن مَّتَّعْنَاهُمْ سِنِينَ}
{أَفَرَأَيْتَ} {مَّتَّعْنَاهُمْ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 205
205. “What would you say if We delayed Our punishment and gave them a certain period of respite during which they can rejoice in their well-being?
206. “And even if this period during which they rejoice lasted for a long time, eventually Allah’s commandment would be fulfilled, and the dire punishment Allah has foretold.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 207
207. “What kind of protection will they have after having enjoyed their long life? Will their happiness in any way attenuate the punishment or keep them safe from it? For the punishment of Allah will surely come, sooner or later, and there is no comfort in the thought of happiness followed by such eternal punishment.”
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 208
208. Allah Almighty speaks of His justice and His fairness towards His creatures, and says that He did not destroy a single city in ancient times unless it had previously been sent messengers to alert the inhabitants and forewarn them against Allah’s retribution and His terrible punishment if they persisted in their unbelief and their oppression, and to invite them to come to Allah and let them know where they might find shelter from His wrath.
{ذِكْرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ}
{ظَالِمِينَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 209
209. Allah Almighty sends them messengers to warn them, reminding them of the faith and inviting them to come to Allah. Allah Almighty does not neglect any of His creatures.
{وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتْ بِهِ ٱلشَّيَاطِينُ}
{ٱلشَّيَاطِينُ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 210
210. Then Allah Almighty replies to the idolaters who say that Mohammad is a sorcerer and that what is revealed to him is the kind of thing that sorcerers report…. Allah then tells them: “The Quran has not been sent down through devils as a kind of magic and soothsaying.”
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 211
211. Sending down the Quran is inconsistent with the nature of devils; for the characteristic of devils is to sow disorder and to lead men astray, whereas the Quran is a guide, a light, and a solid proof to men of the existence of Allah, of the good and the true. There is consequently an enormous disparity between devils and the Quran. Then Allah Almighty says that devils are incapable of transmitting the Quran; for to transmit the Quran is not an easy task. Furthermore, they are prevented from hearing the Quran when it is revealed, as is shown in the following verse.
212. Devils are utterly prevented from hearing the Quran. This is a proof of Allah’s mercy towards His servants, a preservation of His faith, and a support for His Book and His messenger.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 213
213. Allah Almighty commands His servants, the believers, to worship Him alone, without any associate; He informs them that whoever ascribes an associate to Him will be punished. Allah says that in the form of a speech to the Messenger (peace be upon him), but the speech is addressed rather to Mohammad’s nation, since the Messenger himself is infallible.
{وَأَنذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ ٱلأَقْرَبِينَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 214
214. Allah Almighty commands His Messenger to alert the closest members of his clan and warn them that nothing will be of any use to them on the Day of Resurrection except belief in Allah and their good works.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 215
215. Allah Almighty commands His Messenger to be gentle towards the believers among the servants of Allah who follow him, and to treat them with kindness, for that will encourage them to be faithful to the Messenger and to love him even more.
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 216
216. If those close members of your clan whom you have warned should disobey you, that will cause you no harm, for you have carried out my commands. Say to them, therefore: “I disavow you, you and all that you invoke apart from Allah.” (In a Hadith reported by Muslim, the Prophet (peace be upon him) says: “By Him who possesses my soul! Anyone who hears me and then disbelieves in me, whether he be Jew or Christian, will go to Hell.”)
{وَتَوكَّلْ عَلَى ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 217
217. “In all things, place your trust in Allah, the Almighty and Omnipotent; for He will support you, protect you, and succour you; He will make you victorious and He will exalt you, through His power and His mercy.
{ٱلَّذِي يَرَاكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ}
{يَرَاكَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 218
218. “He sees you when you act and in all situations.
{وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِي ٱلسَّاجِدِينَ}
{ٱلسَّاجِدِينَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 219
219. “He sees you as you assume your various positions in prayer (salah) and when you lead those who pray.” (Ibn Abbas says that the word takaloubak signifies the descent of the Prophet from one prophet to another, until Allah makes of him a prophet.)
221. Certain idolaters have claimed that what the Messenger of Allah has reported is not true, that he has invented it according to his own wishes and with the advice of a genie. Allah Almighty replies to those who invent such lies concerning His noble Messenger Mohammad (peace be upon him), in order to purify him and to affirm that what Mohammad has revealed comes from Allah and not from devils; for devils descend only on those who resemble them among sorcerers, liars, and the perverted.
222. They descend on every calumniator, liar, and great sinner among the sorcerers.
{يُلْقُونَ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ كَاذِبُونَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 223
223. Devils listen at the gates of Heaven and hear talk of the Invisible, and then they add their own lies. Then they communicate these to their human friends, who report them and add to them; people believe them because they say these words were heard in Heaven. Mohammad (peace be upon him) is a truthful man who does not lie. There is no way in which he can be compared with lying sorcerers.
{وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلْغَاوُونَ}
{ٱلْغَاوُونَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 224
224. The idolaters have said: “Mohammad is a poet.” They have said: “The Quran is poetry.” Allah therefore sends down this verse to reply to their blasphemy and to tell them that this Quran and the wisdom and laws that it contains, as well as its style, are utterly different from poetry. Mohammad’s situation is the utter opposite of that of poets, for he speaks only truth, wisdom, and verity; and the faithful who follow him are truthful. Poets speak only what is false, and are followed only by those who have gone astray.
225. Poets discuss all kinds of vanity and ramble in all manner of speech. Sometimes they insult one person and sometimes they praise another, without ever being guided by the truth.
{وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لاَ يَفْعَلُونَ}
Surah Ash-Shu’ara: Verse 226
226. Poets preach what they do not practice and boast of acts they have not performed, whereas the Messenger to whom the Quran has been revealed is neither a sorcerer nor a poet, for his state is the opposite of that of the poets.
227. But from the account of poets given above Allah Almighty accepts those poets who are believers, who carry out good deeds, who remember Allah, and who have taken it upon themselves to oppose those who insult believers. (In a Hadith reported by al-Imam Ahmad, the Prophet (peace be upon him) says: “The believer fights with the sword and with the word. By Him who possesses my soul, your struggle by means of the word is as worthy as the shooting of arrows in battle!”) Those who have done themselves harm through idolatry and by denying the Messenger will soon see the reversal of fortune they will undergo on the Day of Resurrection. On that day, no excuses will be of any use to the unjust.
