Surah Al-Qari’ah is the 101st chapter of the Quran, containing 11 verses. Revealed in Makkah, it takes its name from Al-Qari’ah, the striking Calamity, a name for the Day of Judgement, opening by asking what it is and what will make the listener know what it is. It describes people on that Day like scattered moths and the mountains like carded wool, before setting out the two possible fates: whoever’s scales of good deeds are heavy will have a pleasant life, while whoever’s are light will have his home in Hawiyah, a Fire fiercely blazing. Below you can read the full Surah Al-Qari’ah in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.

Tafsir of the Verses

{ ٱلْقَارِعَةُ }
Surah Al-Qari’ah: Verse 1
1. The Day of Clamour is another name for Judgement Day. It is called so because it agitates the hearts because of the tremendous fear it causes.
{ مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ }
Surah Al-Qari’ah: Verse 2
2. What is the qaria’a? Due to its violence, and the intensity of its terrors, it is very difficult to imagine.
{ وَمَآ أَدْرَاكَ مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ }
{ أَدْرَاكَ }

Surah Al-Qari’ah: Verse 3
3. What will explain it to you? For it is something that man cannot imagine or vizualize.
{ يَوْمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ كَٱلْفَرَاشِ ٱلْمَبْثُوثِ }

Surah Al-Qari’ah: Verse 4
4. Allah Almighty then describes it and says: “On that day, men will be confused and will wander about not knowing what they are doing, as if they were scattered butterflies.”
{ وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ ٱلْمَنفُوشِ }

Surah Al-Qari’ah: Verse 5
5. The mountains would have crumbled by then and their particles become scattered, like wool that has been teased until the hairs are separated and fly with the breeze.
{ فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ }
{ مَوَازِينُهُ }

Surah Al-Qari’ah: Verse 6
6. As for he whose good deeds outnumber his evil ones, that is his good deeds are heavy and outweigh the evil ones,
{ فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ }
Surah Al-Qari’ah: Verse 7
7. his reward is Paradise, and he will have a life of contentment which will freshen his eye and gladden his heart.
{ وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ }
{ مَوَازِينُهُ }

Surah Al-Qari’ah: Verse 8
8. But he whose evil deeds outweigh the good ones, that is, the scale of his evil deeds is heavy while that of his good deeds is light,
{ فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ }

Surah Al-Qari’ah: Verse 9
9. he will fall into a deep pit in Hell, plunging in like a child running to his mother. (The meaning could be that he falls into Hell, head first.)
{ وَمَآ أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ }
{ أَدْرَاكَ }

Surah Al-Qari’ah: Verse 10
10. What will explain and describe to you the meaning of this abyss?
{ نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ }
Surah Al-Qari’ah: Verse 11
11. It is a fierce scorching fire into which the unjust criminal will fall. There he will remain eternally as a punishment to him for the sins he has perpetrated..
