Reflections on the Name of Allah: Maalik-Ul-Mulk
The Eternal Possessor of Sovereignty. The Owner of Absolute Sovereignty, The Owner of Dominion. Lord of the Kingdom. He is the sole owner of all creation and, with absolute authority, can act in any manner, at any time, and in any way.
The distinction between “Malik” and “Mālik” in the context of the name “Al-Mulk” is insightful and profound. “Al-Mulk” refers to Allah’s dominion, sovereignty, and absolute ownership over all creation.
When combined with “Malik” or “Mālik,” it emphasizes Allah’s unmatched authority and sovereignty as the King or Owner of all things. As “The King of Absolute Sovereignty” or “The Owner of Absolute Sovereignty,” Allah’s power knows no bounds, and His decrees are carried out with perfection and wisdom according to His will.
This understanding underscores the fundamental concept of Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah) in Islam, affirming that there is no deity or authority besides Allah. Recognizing Allah as Al-Malik Al-Mulk reminds us of His supreme authority and absolute control over the universe, instilling awe, reverence, and submission in His servants.
Contemplating upon these divine attributes serves to deepen our understanding of Allah’s sovereignty and strengthens our faith in His wisdom and justice. It inspires humility and gratitude, prompting us to acknowledge our dependence on Allah and to surrender ourselves completely to His will.
“Say, “O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.”— (Qur’an 3:26)
It is mentioned 2 times in the Holy Quran
