Who was the first one to write "In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful"?
The first person to write the Basmalah ("In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful") was Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon) PBUH, as recorded in the Holy Quran in his letter to the Queen of Sheba.
Prophet Sulaiman PBUH in a letter he sent to the Queen of Sheba.
(She said, "O eminent ones, indeed, to me has been delivered a noble letter. Verily! It is from Sulaiman (Solomon), and verily! It (reads): In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful;")
[Surah Al-Naml 27: 29-30]
Scholarly Insight: Although the Basmalah is the opening of every Surah in the Quran except Surah At-Tawbah, its historical mention in Surah Al-Naml serves as a profound reminder of the prophetic tradition. It teaches us that starting any significant matter or communication with the Name of Allah is a legacy shared by the Messengers to bring barakah and guidance to their address.
