Who was the one Allah referred to in Surah Al-Muddathir [74:11-16]?
Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah was one of the prominent leaders of the Quraish. Allah describes in these verses how He created him alone (without wealth or children), then granted him vast fortunes and sons who were always by his side. Despite this ease of life, his arrogance grew, and he challenged the truth of the Quran, for which he was promised a severe consequence.
Quranic Evidence |
(And leave to me ˹O Prophet˺ the one I created all by Myself, and granted him abundant wealth, and children always by his side, and made life very easy for him. Yet he is hungry for more. But no! ˹For˺ he has been truly stubborn with Our revelations.)
Scholarly Insight: These verses showcase a divine challenge to the arrogant soul. The term "Waheedan" refers to him being born alone, or created by Allah without intermediaries, reminding man of his humble origins regardless of the worldly power he later acquires.
