What is the wisdom behind the calamities that befall Allah's creations?
Allah Almighty is Fair and Just, and He tests man through calamities for multiple profound reasons. These tests are ultimately designed to benefit the believer in this worldly life and the Hereafter.
The Divine Wisdom Behind Calamities |
1. Elevating Ranks and Cleansing Hearts
Allah loves us and He loves to admit us to Jannah. He tests man to see whether he will be patient when he gets sick, or he will get angry. He who is patient will be rewarded by being admitted to Jannah. Diseases and calamities are decreed by Allah to elevate through them the ranks of people and cleanse our hearts and morals from vanity, haughtiness, and grandeur. During sickness, man gets closer to his Lord by making Du'a to Him, and he realizes the value of well-being and health.
2. Awakening the Heedless
Allah the Almighty has created the calamities so that the deviated person may remember the great mission for which he has been created, and therefore, he will wake up from his obliviousness, and he will remember Allah, seeking His Forgiveness and remaining patient on the calamity.
3. Perfecting Worship in All States
Man should worship Allah in prosperity and adversity. This worship is performed in adversity when a man is tested by a calamity, and he remains patient on it, turning to Allah in repentance. Man is also tested in prosperity when he is given blessings, so his worship of Allah is performed by being grateful.
(Corruption has spread on land and sea as a result of what people’s hands have done, so that Allah may cause them to taste the consequences of some of their deeds and perhaps they might return to the Right Path.) [Ar-Rum 30: 41]
(Every soul will taste death. And We test you O humanity with good and evil as a trial, then to Us you will all be returned.) [Al-Anbiya' 21: 35]
Scholarly Insight: In Islamic Creed (Aqeedah), the existence of worldly calamities is never viewed as a contradiction to Allah's Mercy. Scholars consistently explain that trials (Ibtila') serve as a divine mechanism for purification. When a believer suffers gracefully, their sins are expiated, just as a furnace removes impurities from gold. Furthermore, continuous ease can lead to spiritual arrogance; thus, adversity acts as a crucial spiritual anchor, reminding humanity of its absolute dependence on the Creator and redirecting straying hearts back to the Straight Path.
