How should a person thank Allah for the blessings he has?
Gratitude is not just a feeling: it is a comprehensive state of being. To thank Allah properly: one must manifest His blessings in their life. This is achieved by acknowledging the source of the blessing: praising Him verbally: and dedicating one's energy to what pleases the Creator.
The Three Forms of Gratitude |
1. With one's heart: To confess that all the blessings one has are from Allah.
2. With one's tongue: To thank Allah and praise Him: to say the truth at all times: and to say a kind word.
3. With one's faculties: To act with all one's faculties and use them in what pleases Almighty Allah.
Evidence from the Holy Quran and Sunnah |
Saba 34:13: (Work gratefully: O family of David! Only a few of My servants are truly grateful.)
He Almighty considered that the work of a human can be considered equivalent to gratitude. /
Hadith of A'isha (RA): The Prophet (PBUH) used to stand in prayer at night until his feet swelled. When asked why: he said: "Should I not be a grateful servant?"
Scholarly Insight: Scholars of Islam emphasize that Shuhud al-Minna (witnessing the blessing) starts in the heart: but its proof is the action of the limbs. As mentioned in the Holy Quran regarding the family of David (AS): gratitude was commanded as "work" (Amal). This signifies that staying away from sins is the highest form of thanking Allah. The Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) further illustrates that even the one whose sins are forgiven continues to worship extensively: not out of obligation alone: but as a manifestation of profound gratitude for the Gift of Guidance.
