Allah Almighty says: “Close friends will be enemies to one another on that Day, except the righteous,” Az-Zukhruf
The meaning of the verse is that every friendship in this world, except that which is based on faith, turns into enmity between the two friends because it was not based on obedience to Allah, but rather on His disobedience, as the Almighty said through Abraham when he said to his people:
“He said ˹to his people˺, “You have taken idols ˹for worship˺ instead of Allah, only to keep ˹the bond of˺ harmony among yourselves in this worldly life. But on the Day of Judgment, you will disown and curse one another. Your home will be the Fire, and you will have no helper!”” Al-Ankabut 29:25
Ibn Abbas RA said: “Every friendship turns to enmity except that friendship based on piety. (or between the pious)
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) as saying, “If two men love each other for the sake of Allah, one in the East and the other in the West, Allah Almighty will bring them together on the Day of Judgment and say: this is one whom you loved for My sake.”
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger as saying, “There are seven whom Allah will cover with His shade on the day when there will be no shade but His: a just imam; a young man who grows up worshipping Allah; a man whose heart is attached to the mosque from the time he leaves it till he returns to it; two men who love one another for Allah’s sake, meeting thus and separating thus; a man who remembers Allah in solitude, his eyes pouring forth tears; a man who, when accosted by a woman of rank and beauty, says, ‘I fear Allah; and a man who gives alms concealing it so that his left-hand does not know what his right hand bestows.” (Bukhari and Muslim.
The previous Hadith mentions two men who love one another for Allah’s sake,
Each of them loved the other not for worldly interest or for a lustful purpose or any other reason but for the sake Allah Almighty and for the sake of His pleasures and obedience, and their meeting and separation were on that basis. Their friendship remained while they met, and when they separated. These two will be in the shadow of the Throne of the Most Merciful on the Day of Resurrection,
It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘ When the believers are saved from the Fire, No one of you disputes more intensely for something that is rightly his in this world than the believers will dispute with their Lord for their brothers who have entered the Fire. They will say: ‘Our Lord, our brothers used to pray with us and fast with us, and perform Hajj with us, and you have caused them to enter the Fire?’ He will say: ‘Go and bring forth whomever you recognize among them.’ So they will go to them and will recognize them by their appearances. Among them will be those who have been seized by the Fire up to the middle of their shins, and some among them those whom it has taken up to his ankles. They will bring them forth, then they will say: ‘Our Lord, we have brought forth those whom You commanded us (to bring forth).’
“When the believers are saved from the Fire” means If Allah Almighty saves them from Hell-fire, and they are safe from entering it after the hardships they passed through, then the believer will address the Lord Almighty – and he will dispute and plead so that his friend can be admitted with him in Paradise, and this indicates that the righteous intercede for their companions, who had done good deeds and evil ones, to enter Paradise with them.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) described the intensity of the argument:
‘No one of you disputes more intensely for something that is rightly his in this world than the believers will dispute with their Lord for their brothers who have entered the Fire.”
That is, they defend their companions just as they defended the rights they had in this world, for just as a person does not abandon his right in this world, he does not abandon his brother in the hereafter.
And their argument is that: “ They will say: ‘Our Lord, our brothers used to pray with us and fast with us, and perform Hajj with us, and you have caused them to enter the Fire?”
Ie They have deeds like ours, those deeds which have brought us to Your mercy. They intercede for their companions who did good deeds, but which did not lead them to Paradise because their evil deeds outnumbered those good deeds.
This indicates that believers intercede for their brethren and bring them into Paradise with them, and it also indicates that the believer should
be keen to stay within the company of the righteous and the good, so that he may receive their intercession.
The conclusion of the answer is that the believer intercedes for his companion on the Day of Resurrection and that friendship and the beneficial relationship between creation that will last until the Day of Resurrection is one that is based on the love of Allah Almighty.
