How Did Allah Make Pharaoh's Fate an Example for All Mankind?
Allah the Almighty placed Pharaoh's dead body on an elevated place on the earth so that the Children of Israel could see he had perished. His fate has remained since that time as a sign so that all creation would know they are created to worship Allah, exalted and sublime be He, and that if they deny this truth, they too will perish.
("Today We will preserve your corpse so that you may become an example for those who come after you. And surely most people are heedless of Our signs!") (Yunus 10:92)
1. A Sign Preserved, Yet Overlooked |
The same ayah that announces this sign closes with a sobering observation: "most people are heedless of Our signs." A sign being preserved and visible does not guarantee it will actually be noticed or heeded, this closing line applies the lesson of Pharaoh's fate beyond his own drowning to a much broader pattern of human inattention. The ayah itself, today We will save your body (10:92), is explained in whose body was saved from the sea as a sign.
2. Part of a Larger Ending |
This preservation follows directly from Pharaoh's drowning itself and his rejected last-minute repentance, both covered in the drowning of Pharaoh in the sea and why Allah did not accept Pharaoh's repentance.
Scholarly Insight: Yunus 10:92 records Allah's preservation of Pharaoh's body as a sign for later generations. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Yunus.
